It’s no coincidence that TikTok shows you videos that align with your current obsessions. If you like one video of a puppy, you may be on animal TikTok forever (which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world). TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) really is for YOU. If you’ve ever wondered how they are so accurate, we can tell you why.
Earlier this year, TikTok released that their algorithm ranks videos based on your, “interests you express as a new user and adjusting for things you indicate you’re not interested in” among several other things. The content that you interact with influences the videos you will see. So consider this your warning that next time you comment on a TikTok, it may be your feed’s new personality trait.
Commenting, liking, sharing, and following all affect the way your FYP is curated. Another thing that influences what you see is your location and contacts. That’s why you may feel like you see your mutual friends on TikTok all of the time. You are more likely to see content that is posted by people in your area and in your follower’s circle. This can be a good and a bad thing… depends on if you want your old middle school best friend to see your newest TikTok.
TikTok assigns a level of interest to all of the videos you engage with. If you tend to watch a certain video all the way to the end, then you are probably more interested in it than a video you engage with for three seconds. TikTok notes this and uses it to show you more interesting videos.
Ok so the final question, how do TikTok videos blow up? You don’t have to have millions of followers to go viral on TikTok. Using captions, hashtags, popular sounds, and more can affect the reach of your videos. You may end up on a lot of people’s FYP when you least expect it. Consistency is key, so start filming your videos now!
Thank goodness for TikTok’s algorithm, because we can’t stop scrolling through our FYP. Head over to the Nesscessity Instagram and let us know some of your favorite accounts to follow on TikTok :)
