The TikTok Algorithm Explained

The TikTok Algorithm Explained

We’ve already explained how the Instagram Algorithm works and we know there is some curiosity around the TikTok algorithm, so it’s time to reveal the platform's secrets. In this blog, we’ll share all the important details that you need to know about TikTok’s algorithm and give you tips on how to get your videos on as many For You Pages as possible.

The TikTok Algorithm Explained

What even is the TikTok Algorithm? Well, it’s very similar to Instagram’s, but is focused more on what the user is interested in. In other words, it’s a complex system designed to serve users content based on what it believes to be of high interest.

According to TikTok, the algorithm recommends content based on a number of factors, starting with the interests you express when you become a new user and adjusting for the things you indicate aren’t of interest to you.

So How Does the TikTok Algorithm Work?

Like we said before, it’s a very complex system due to the many factors that influence how content is served to users. A couple of the main components that the algorithm evaluates are activity, video subject matter, location and language, audio, and “Not Interested” feedback.

These main components are pretty self explanatory, especially if you are a frequent TikTok user. Whether or not a video shows up on your FYP is largely based on how much engagement it has, with engagement making up everything from likes to shares to re-watches. TikTok is also great at categorizing content based on a user's interests.

The app will determine subject matter that is most relevant to you based on caption keywords, sounds, hashtags, effects, and content. Another way the platform serves high-interest videos to you is by removing videos you’ve marked as “Not Interested,” users you’ve hidden, and videos you skip through. Unfortunately, follower count and previously high-performing videos don’t influence the TikTok algorithm.

10 Tips to Use For More Views

Obviously, the TikTok algorithm is always adapting, changing, and learning from user behavior, so it’s important to stay on top of what is trending at the moment. Based on everything we know about how the algorithm works, here are 10 ways to boost your engagement and beat the algorithm for growth:

  1. Hook your audience within three seconds
